Excerpt:
Perin McSmith picked up the last item on top of his dresser. Instead of immediately packing it away in his box, Peri stopped and took a good look at it. He couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face. It was a picture of him and his best friend, Devin. Taken when they were younger, it was one of his favorites.
He remembered the day like it was yesterday. It was the night before his high school graduation. They’d gone out to celebrate one last time before school was out, just him and Dev.
That next week Peri would start his brand new job at Spaceport Prime, the largest port on the North American continent servicing flights bound for space travel. Dev had been working as a docking gate technician for the past year and was able to get Peri an interview. Dev put in a good word with the supervisor, and Peri got the job.
It was a time of big changes for Peri. Not only was he leaving school and the orphanage he’d lived in all his life, but he was starting a new career and moving into a new apartment.
All he had to do was find a man and life would be complete.
Of course, things didn’t always work out the way you planned them.
Peri was grateful for his friend. Devin was always there for him. Growing up in the McSmith Group Home for Boys, they’d bonded almost from the start. They were more than just friends; they were brothers. Not that anyone would mistake them as blood related. Peri was thinner, and had wavy black hair and brown eyes. He’d always wished he had Devin’s pretty blond hair.
He placed the picture into the box and sealed it. That was the last of it. Anything not included with the pre-furnished apartment had already been sold. Where Peri was going, he would only need his clothes and personal belongings.
Never in a million years did he think he’d be packing up and moving across the galaxy. Dev was the one who yearned to travel the stars and see what was beyond the solar system. Peri had no such desires. It never occurred to him that he might actually leave the planet.
But seeing how happy Devin was in his new home, he was a little envious. He found himself missing his friend something fierce. Sure they video chatted regularly and Devin sent pictures, but it wasn’t the same.
The planet Dega was so beautiful. It was no wonder Devin wanted to stay.
It was the perfect place to raise a family. That’s what Devin was doing. He was living with Bastian Drago, his bondmate. They had a son, Callan, who was the cutest little thing Peri had ever seen. Half-human and half-Degan, he took the best traits from each of his dads and made a perfect little baby. And now Devin was pregnant again.
Peri really had a hard time wrapping his brain around the whole situation. First Bastian bonded with Devin. Peri didn’t really understand the specifics, but Dev said it was like they were soulmates. What really freaked him out was the pregnancy thing. Something about Bastian’s DNA changed Devin’s body so he could make a baby… a once-in-a-lifetime freak mutation. It was just so wrong. But damn, they sure made a cute baby.
It took Peri some time to get up the courage to make the move, but he did it. He was leaving Earth and moving to Dega.
Okay, so getting fired from his job at the spaceport was a big help in pushing him to make the change. He’d been late one too many times, according to his supervisor. Besides, it was only a matter of time before his job was replaced by the new automated docking operating system.
Whatever.
